MOTORSPORT

Zircotec's performance coatings are used throughout motorsport from F1, Nascar and World Rally across a broad range of professional and enthusiast racing through to grass-routes motorsport. Our involvement with motorsport started with F1 and Le Man, and we have been a trusted supplier to teams in both of these series for more than a decade. Our key product offerings to motorsport are:

  • Zircotec® exhaust system coatings
  • ZircoFlexTM foil - our flexible ceramic heat shield material
  • Zircotec® carbon composite coatings
  • Anti-wear coating for carbon composites
  • Wheel coating

Each of these product offerings is described below in further detail.

Zircotec® Exhaust System Coatings

Our ThermoHold® based ceramic coatings have been developed to significantly reduce heat transfer, providing lightweight and easily packaged coatings to reduce heat loss from exhaust system components. Performance WhiteTM delivers the ultimate in thermal barrier performance. It has quickly become the mainstay of Zircotec's offering to motorsport, and is now used in a broad range of other automotive applications.

We recomend Performance WhiteTM for most motorsport applications, though we do have a range of other exhaust system coating types that may be applicable to some forms of motorsport.

Coating an exhaust system, manifold or header can significantly improve engine performance (especially for turbo engines) as well as protecting under bonnet components and making pit stops faster, easier and safer. In the cabin, drivers are cooler so more able to concentrate and the need for airflow can be reduced.

ZircoFlexTM Foil - Our flexible ceramic heat shield material

ZircoFlexTM is our revolutionary flexible ceramic heat shield material, offering superb thermal barrier performance at minimal weight (0.46kg/m2) and minimal thickness (0.25mm) . The material is produced as a thin aluminium backed foil that is shipped in the form of a roll.

Typical applications for ZircoFlexTM include:

  • Protection of engine bay components from engine/exhaust heat
  • Bodywork protection
  • Reduction of heat soak through footwells, bulkheads, etc.
  • Fuel tank protection
  • Thermal insulation of silencer units, etc.

Zircotec® Carbon Composite Coatings

We have developed a range of coatings that are plasma sprayed onto carbon composite (and some plastics) to provide protection from radiant heat or hot gas, offer fire resistance, and protect against delamination and resin melt. Additionally, we can apply a heat-reflective coating for extra protection against radiant heat. Adopted widely in F1, and with patents pending, our technology is attracting significant interest from other forms of motorsport.

Our coating is commonly used on: body panels; brake calipers & other brake components; chassis parts; diffusers; exhaust ducts; suspension components; heatshields.

Anti-Wear Coating for Carbon Composites

A further derivative of our carbon composite coating technology is a product that provides physical protection for the surface of carbon composite components, helping to prevent damage from wear, abrasion, stone chips, etc.

The coating is particularly applicable to vulnerable front-end and under-car components. Click here for further details of our Carbon Composite Coating.

Zircotec® Wheel Coating

Zircotec has developed a coating that can be applied to the inside surface of a wheel hub to help prevent the unwanted transfer of heat from the braking system into the wheel, thereby helping reduce the effect on tyre pressure. Weight gain as a result of the coating is small, though for minimal weight gain it is possible for us to apply the coating to just selected areas of the wheel.

Front wheel temperature reductions of up to 40oC (104oF) have been reported for one motorsport application. Contact us for further details on our motorsport wheel coating.
