Electrical insulation

Conductive metal coating for carbon composite EMC shielding

We have developed a range of coatings that are plasma sprayed onto carbon composite, glass fibre and some plastics to provide electrical insulation. We are able to apply a thin electrically insulating coating that:

  • consists of a electrically insulating ceramic based material that is both thin (typically 0.1mm thick) and lightweight;
  • is proven to provide significant electrical insulation for carbon composite components and other materials;
  • is extremely well adhered. Our plasma based application process results in a coating that is in effect "welded" in place (so our coatings are robust; highly resistant to vibration and mechanical damage; and tollerant to significant flexing of the substrate);

In  addition to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) protection, these coatings are able to provide electrical safety for high voltage devices, i.e. by providing a connection to earth.

Summary of key benefits

  • Use composites where previously it was not possible
  • Helps prevent stray electrical currents
  • Maximise available package space
