Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro Magnetic Compatibility
(EMC) shielding can be a significant problem where lightweight materials are to be used since carbon composite is relatively trasparent to RF signals. We are able to apply a thin
electrically conductive coating that:
- consists of a highly conductive aluminium based material that is both thin (typically 0.1mm thick) and lightweight;
- is proven
to provide significant RF and EMC shielding for carbon composite components;
- is extremely well adhered. Our plasma based application process results in a coating that is in effect "welded" in place (so our coatings are robust; highly resistant to vibration and mechanical damage; and tollerant to significant flexing of the substrate);
- incorporate a less conductive sub-layer to prevent electrical contact with the carbon composite.
In addition to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
protection, these coatings
are able to provide electrical safety for high voltage devices, i.e.
by providing a connection to earth.
Summary
of key benefits
- Use
carbon composites where previously it was not possible
- Improve
EMC performance of composite-enclosed electronics
- Maximise
available package space
