Zircotec's involvement in F1 features in BBC news coverage of British Grand Prix

9th July 2010

BBC News coverage on the run up to the 2010 British Grand Prix features the work carried out by Zircotec for F1. Click here to view the BBC footage.

Zircotec works with many of the F1 teams to provide thermal protection to car components that might otherwise be damaged by heat. This includes the thermal insulation of hot exhaust and brake components, and the thermal protection of carbon composite parts such as structural components and heat shields.

Zircotec features in Formula-1 Exhibition at Science Museum, London

29th June 2010

Dont miss your chance to see a range of race winning Formula 1 technologies in an exhibition at the London Science Museum. It is more than a year since Ron Dennis, then CEO and Chairman of McLaren Group, opened an exhibition called "Fast Forward 20 ways F1 is changing our world" showing how Formula 1 technology is being applied to fields of research and innovation away from the racetrack. The exhibition has been extremely popular (it was due to close in April 2010 but it has remained open due to ongoing demand), and interest has increasing yet further ahead of the British Grand Prix. The Science Museum is now considering putting together a touring version of the exhibition.

Zircotec's technology for protecting carbon composite from the effects of heat, fire and general wear and tear is one of 20 innovative technologies featured in the exhibition. Our technology is demonstrated on a set of carbon composite F1 wishbones where part of the surface has been plasma-spray coated with a ceramic based thermal barrier and then over-sprayed with a reflective coating to protect against radiant heat. The coating allows high strength lightweight materials to be used in environments for which they would otherwise be unsuitable.

Zircotec's carbon composite coatings and their application involve a proprietary Zircotec process for which a patent application has been filed. The coating is itself lightweight, thereby avoiding any significant weight impact for the components on which it is used. It in effect becomes part of the underlying structure resulting in an extremely robust coating that will not easily detach.

Zircotec's coatings are being used by a significant number of F1 teams in 2010, protecting cars and their components from the effects of heat.

The Science Museum has put together the exhibition with the expertise and support of McLaren Marketing Ltd., and the exhibition features the McLaren MP4-21 car built by McLaren Racing for the 2006 season.

Zircotec introduces new faster service options for very urgent work

7th June 2010

Here at Zircotec we often get asked about our turnaround time. For our Standard Service we quote a turnaround of 10 working days, and for most of our customers this is more than adequate (most customers are in fact surprised by how quickly we turnaround their work since unless we are really busy we are normally able to turnaround work in just 6 to 8 working days).

A small but increasing number of our customers are now asking whether we can achieve even faster turnaround times to help them meet important deadlines, and to address this demand we are pleased to introduce two new types of service:

  • A Premium Service - here we will guarantee to turnaround work within our factory within just 2 working days (so a very rapid 48 hour turnaround). In this case we charge a 30% price premium over our Standard Service, and;
  • An Express Service - here we will guarantee to turnaround customer work within our factory in just 5 working days, and in this case we charge a 10% price premium over our Standard Service.

If these new service levels are of interest to you then please raise this with us when you phone to discuss your order. There may be occasions when we are not able to offer these new service levels (eg. during periods of particularly high demand) but we will discuss this with you when you place your order.

Zircotec coating to protect Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera

24th May 2010

Automobili Lamborghini has announced its selection of a high performance Zircotec® ceramic coating to protect its latest supercar, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera.

The new lightweight Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is the latest Lamborghini supercar to benefit from Zircotec's advanced ceramic heat resistant coatings.

The use of Zircotec's proprietary Diamond BlackTM ceramic coating on the car's tailpipe assemblies has allowed Lamborghini to increase the carbon composite content on the car to reduce weight and at the same time improve vehicle presentation. The coating helps to prevent exhaust heat from escaping from the tailpipe, and this has allowed Lamborghini to adopt a more lightweight composite bodywork that contributes to the 70kg weight saving.

Zircotec's Diamond BlackTM ceramic coating is applied to the exhaust at temperatures over 12,000°C using an adapted plasma spray process. This process ensures the ceramic is extremely durable, offering an aesthetically-pleasing finish that will outlast paint or untreated metals. "Zircotec's technology not only protects sensitive composite finishes but also the exhaust itself," says Zircotec's sales director Peter Whyman. "Corroded or flaking exhaust finishes ruin the appearance of the rear of the car. Our technology ensures Lamborghini's latest car will continue to look good for many years."

The durable Diamond BlackTM coating, for which a patent is pending, was tested to ensure that it met the rigorous requirements set down by Lamborghini. "Zircotec's coating met the lifetime and temperature cycling tests set by Lamborghini including rapid cycling in temperature and pressure washing," says Whyman. "The combination of our application method that effectively welds the ceramic to the exhaust, the proprietary ThermoHold® sub-layer formulation, and the unique Diamond BlackTM material make our coating viable for a range of OEM applications."

Zircotec's involvement with the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera follows the highly successful application of Zircotec's thermal barriers on the Reventón and Murciélago LP640 supercars, where the use of the coating delivered both weight reductions through the removal of heatshields and added protection for the composites. For the latest Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, the coating allowed Lamborghini's designers to specify carbon fibre for the diffuser venturi and upper element that surrounds the new quad tailpipe system.

"Our ThermoHold®-based coatings are used in F1 applications to protect delicate composite bodywork and suspension parts," adds Whyman. "This is a good example of technology transfer from the track to the road."

Zircotec® coatings are are only available from Zircotec. All of our coating are applied in our purpose built facility in the UK at Abingdon, Oxfordshire. We are however increasingly working with customers and partner organisations to supply coatings worldwide. Zircotec is very pleased to be able to continue its close working relationship with Lamborghini through its involvement with the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera.
